After a year and a half of working with City Wide Facility Solutions, Rolling Hills Community Church in Nashville entrusted City Wide with a major project that involved a full refinishing of their gym floor—a unique granwood surface that required extensive preparation, custom finishes, and precision work.
Challenges
The gym’s floor showed significant wear and had previously been treated with an incompatible finish, resulting in a rough, uneven surface. The church needed more than a cosmetic update; the floor required structural restoration to address both cracks and surface wear. City Wide’s Nashville team, led by Jason Streger, assessed the floor’s condition and determined that a multi-step refinishing approach would best address the floor’s needs.
Solutions
City Wide designed a custom refinishing process tailored to meet the church’s needs. The process incorporated an epoxy-based paint and clear coat finish to ensure a durable, long-lasting surface. Planned over 10 days, the project was executed to minimize disruption by isolating the gym area while keeping the rest of the facilities open.
- Preparation: The process began with rough-sanding the floor to remove the existing damaged surface and expose the raw wood underneath. After sanding, the team conducted a thorough cleaning to remove dirt, dust, and debris, ensuring proper adhesion of the epoxy coating. Professional-grade equipment was used to control dust hazards, safeguarding both workers and the surrounding environment. This careful preparation laid the groundwork for a smooth and even finish, critical for long-term durability.
- Application: For the application phase, initial plans to apply the epoxy with a T-bar were adjusted in favor of rolling, which provided a smoother and more even application. The process included two layers of epoxy base coat, precise sport line painting, and a final clear coat for added protection and enhanced durability.
- Durability and Maintenance: The epoxy coating was selected for its exceptional resilience in high-traffic areas. Its hardened surface resists wear and requires minimal upkeep, with only an annual clear coat needed for maintenance.
This approach not only addressed visible wear but also reinforced the floor’s durability, enhancing the longevity of the gym’s most utilized space.
