Challenges
Blackacre, Kentucky’s first nature preserve, faced significant challenges with its driveway, which had been gravel for over 100 years. The uneven surface not only detracted from the scenic beauty of the area but also made access difficult for both vehicles and foot traffic. With over 60,000 visitors each year, maintaining safe and easy access was crucial. Focused on preserving its natural environment while promoting outdoor education, Blackacre needed a solution that would enhance accessibility without compromising its commitment to nature.
Solutions
City Wide took on the challenge by designing a comprehensive paving plan for the 2,500-foot long and 12-18-foot-wide driveway. Under the leadership of Director of Sales Mike Reves, who has a strong background in paving, a surface material was selected that aligned with Blackacre’s needs and budget. The project involved:
Preparation: One day was dedicated to prepping the site while Blackacre remained operational, ensuring minimal disruption to visitors.
Paving: The paving work took place over one day, during which operations of the nature conservancy were temporarily halted to facilitate the work.
Curing: A third day allowed the new surface to cure, further ensuring its durability and longevity.
Through precise planning, the project was completed efficiently, using only the necessary time and materials, keeping costs down.
Results
The finished product is a beautifully paved driveway, providing a smooth surface that enhances both vehicular and pedestrian access. This transformation not only improves the aesthetic appeal of Blackacre but also promotes greater visitor engagement, encouraging the community to explore the natural beauty and educational opportunities the preserve offers.
