Why It’s Crucial to Have a Workplace Wellness Plan All Year Round
If you’re a facility owner or a building manager, you may enjoy the warmer months when viruses seem to be at an all-time low. So, if you begin to hear an increase of sniffling, sneezing, or coughing in the office, the last thing on your mind is the common cold, right?
Although most people will assume those symptoms are allergy-related, it’s still possible for the common cold to strike your facility in the summer months. If this happens, it could make for a very long battle against viruses with the rest of the year still to go.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are over 200 viruses that can cause the common cold year-round. With that in mind, it’s no wonder we still catch a bug even in 90-degree weather. But there’s some science behind why we don’t see colds as commonly at this time of the year. “We found that your body fights that infection more effectively and blocks it from growing if the cells that are infected in the nose are warm,” Dr. Ellen Foxman, who is an assistant professor of laboratory medicine at Yale School of Medicine, told TIME magazine. However, she added a minor drop in temperature can result in that virus multiplying by 1,000 in a short span of time.
For facility owners or building managers, it’s crucial to keep a workplace wellness plan going year-round, especially if the climate has dramatic shifts during the year.

Below are a few tips to help you prepare for and even prevent viruses spreading at your facility:
- Keep an eye on the S. influenza surveillance report – run by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) – throughout the year. This tool will help keep you aware of any changes you may need to make regarding your workplace wellness plan.
- Remind people at your facility the importance of sanitary behavior. This can include hand-washing and sanitizing signs in restrooms or at high-touch areas such as front doors. There was once a study held in a doctor’s office, where a group of people were asked if they noticed and read the posters that were on the walls when they were waiting or in passing. The results showed of 319 patients, 82% of them had noticed the signage.
- Even if the virus count remains low in your facility during warmer months, it’s never too early to start preparing for the onset of cold and flu season in the winter.
